The original scan of this was made entirely out of paper cutouts from various men's fashion magazines. As someone predominantly used to drawing elements to add detail, working entirely in paper was a new challenge. Upon scanning it, I realised up close a lot of it looked very messy - glue crumbs, bits of loose paper and uneven paper texture really seemed to show up. Using the clone stamp tools in photoshop, I managed to smooth out and neaten up areas that otherwise looked really scrappy - put it over the background (an old Arcade Fire advert) - and it ended up looking really nice and neat and refined. Originally I was going to add type to it in order to make it look like a mock-up fashion mag but I opted against it.
I used the exact same method to create these two, using bits of extra texture that i'd scanned to create the surrounding elements of the piece. I feel like these are starting to be come a turning point in the way that I'm working, because i'm no longer just pumping out loads and loads of unrefined sketches - i'm actually stopping to create things that look "finished" and I think it's really starting to pay off. I definitely am starting to see the importance of stopping and refining work.
