All of these were drawn whilst watching various charlie chaplin films - ranging through The kid, The Tramp, Mabels Marvellous Marriage, The adventurer, Modern Times and The great Dictator.
As someone who really enjoys drawing characters, Charlie Chaplin as ridiculous fun to draw. Because most of his films are silent, most of the narrative has to be purely delivered in how the actors perform, so a lot of his movements and stances and silhouettes are really overexaggered and silly (which makes for great poses!)
I've predominantly used pencil and ink here, with a little bit of digital sketching. Pencil and ink/brush are really good for gestural drawing and exaggerating figures, but perhaps not the best for final pieces due to the fact pencil in particular can become quite smudgy. When working on finals, I'll need to find something that allows me to keep that gesture and silliness, whilst looking a lot more polished.
