OUIL406 Visual Communication SB3 - "Persons of Note" Poster Production

I approached the final poster in a slightly different method to the postcard and the stamps - still keeping faithful to the collage, but this time working purely digitally. Here are the initial textures I made and scanned in to use:

To start, I did a rough initial sketch of what I wanted the end to look like, trying to keep it as loose and gestural as possible to get as much charlie chaplin-ness into him as possible. I then placed the various scans into the document on various layers underneath the sketch - using it as a guideline.

Using the lasso selection tool, on the scan layer I drew a selection around the sketch of the hand, cut - then pasted the new hand on a seperate layer. I used this process to create all the formal elements of this poster.

To get this darker texture, I just inverted a pre-existing one I had placed in. I then started adding detail to his face using the brush tool.

At this point i had a bit of a disaster when I realised I was working a document sized 420 x 594 PIXELS, not millimetres, so I had to scrap this one and retweak it a little bit

In the new document, I fixed his face shape and fixed his pose a little bit as well. Most notably - I changed the hue of his hair and face so it matched the slightly reddy-tint that ended up coming out of the texture inversion. I then added a background, using the bits of spare texture I still had in the document.

Final Poster

I feel like this has been a real turning point in my work - I think this is the first time i've managed to take something from a really nice gestural sketch to a proper, fully finished final with it still managing to retain it's gestural qualities, and as someone who previously has intensely struggled with refinement, I think this is an /enormous/ achievement.

I'm really pleased that I chose to change my original poster design, since I think this one works much, much better and i'd argue its probably my best turn-in to date.
