OUIL504 Illustration 1 Moving Images - Into Dragon Frame

Study task 1 of our Moving images element of this module was to create a motif that could then be animated using stop-frame animation software Dragon Frame. Having already experimented with some different motifs prior, I felt they didn't really hit the nail on the head of the message I was wanting to get accross, so I started thinking of other ways I could do it.

Naomi Klein writes often about bankers and extreme capitalism being a never-ending resource sink; that they are never satisfied with the amount of wealth that they accumulate, even when they own and control pretty much a majority of the world's resources. Images came to mind of the saying 'like gannets', and I imagined that the bankers themselves would look a lot like little baby birds, squawking for more food, which I felt was pretty funny and would work well as an animation.

I made the motif out of cut paper - with little hands and his head attached using bluetack, making them loosely jointed. the idea was to have him flapping his little wing hands with a stream of dollar bills flying into his mouth.

I found working in Dragon Frame to be pretty painless. I've used stop-frame animation manually before, and one of the really good features of Dragon Frame is that it takes a lot of the farting about out of the process; you can set up your camera settings in the programme ensuring that your lighting is on point each time, taking pictures happens at a click of a button - its a really seamless process and I really enjoyed using it

This is what the end result turned out like. I was quite pleased with it in the end, though there would definately be things I'd change; It would have been cool if I could have jointed his mouth so that could move as well - Eleanor also suggested that it might have been nice to build a little nest for him out of twigs to further hammer home the idea that he was bird-like. Overall though, not bad for a first use in dragon frame - total frame count came to 30.
