OUIL404 Visual Language - Observational Sketches

(Camden Docks at Lunchtime)

(Tube Sketches)

(Mcdonalds with Friends)

Over summer, I started doing a whole series of sketches of scenes and things I'd seen. As opposed to just focusing on one element (Such as a singular character, which is what I tend to do a lot) I tried to look at focusing on several, and seeing how these changed and added more narrative to the things I was drawing. I actually really liked how they started to turn out!! By adding the whole scene it communicated so much more than it would have done with a few individuals on their own.

(Student activity in Leeds)

Starting uni I've started to employ this to study points of interest I see in and around town. Changing from a biro to a black fine felt tip actually helped improve the quality of the sketches - the lines tend to be more consistent and its easy to throw them down super quick. I'm hoping to continue this vein of work as I think it could make a really nice series - plus theres plenty of inspiration in a city like leeds!
