OUIL406 Visual Communication SB2 - "Greetings from" Briefing and initial research

For this brief, we have been asked to create a series of 4 postcards that represent the identity of 4 world cities. The end solutions must be vector files, can be any orientation of our choice and must be 120mm X 210mm in dimension.

To kick the brief off, we were asked to do some brief visual research into the cities we were intending to represent. To document this, I decided to lay mine out as a series of moodboards; my cities of choice being London, Berlin, Paris and New York. I tried to pick cities that share a particular connection to each other - in this case being that they all have major underground rapid transit rail networks, so not only was I looking into the visual vibe of the cities as a whole, I narrowed my field to look into the visual branding of each of their underground systems, and what made them distinct from each other.

What I found was that all the systems shared a similar sort of branding - sans serif, bold, clear, easy to understand design - which cities like London and New York having very distinct and iconic designs used for their transit systems. whilst the design for the paris metro isn't much of a song and dance the line is well known for its links with Art Noveau and art - The Berlin line known for it's ecclectical range of tunnel architecture and tile designs.

Having explored and presented what cities and the aspects of the cities I was looking at, we then had to start looking into further visual development and research before going stepping into digital work and experimentation.
