OUIL406 Visual Communications SB2 - "Greetings From" Visual Research for the Metro, Paris

The Paris metro is one of the busiest rapid transit rail systems in the world - its also the 2nd biggest, second only to Russia's network. Unlike London and New york, and perhaps more like Berlin, Paris' metro is visually more recognisable for its design in and around the metro platforms and signs - particularly the Hector Gruiard Art Nouveau metro signs which are practically an icon for Paris themselves.

Platform-wise, it doesn't really have anything architechtually unique about it. I think it looks kind of like a standard tube tunnel thats been squashed into an oval shape. It does however, have a large variety of cool looking plastic seats everywhere. They add a zip of colour to others sometimes kinda dark and grubby platforms. The trains are recognisable for being turquoise and white throughout.

Key Visual Stuff of Note about the Paris Metro

  • Art Nouveau EVERYWHERE - the authorities try to remain faithful to this when designing new features
  • Bits of arty pieces here and there.
  • Bright pops of colour against grubby/plain tunnels.
