OUIL406 Visual Communications SB3 - "Persons of Note" Media Testing

[]

When I started testing for this, I initially wanted to turn my hand at doing it in illustrator and making it vector based - as after our previous brief, part of what we do is to start thinking about how our work can be used professionally (and vector files give you much more scope in terms of using your illustration commercially). However upon playing with some shapes in it, I didn't think it really gave off the right vibe i'd gotten through drawing and watching hours of charlie chaplin content - the vectors were too graphical and modern for something created in an age of black and white silent comedy cinema. Also, i've worked heavily using digital media recently and I kind of wanted to try my hand back with working analogously again for a change. So I decided to start looking at alternative ways I could work using a more refined media, whilst still capturing the cheeky nature of a lot of his comedy work

This turned out from me turning my hand to portraiture painting with ink - looking at how I could add tone and shade by watering down the ink. I do like it - ink is a challenge to use because unlike watercolour paint you can't rehydrate it once its down on the paper, and whilst i'd gotten some nice results sketching using an ink and brush, I think its a medium that takes a lot of time to refine and make nice, which could be probably spent working in something a lot more efficient with a better end aesthetic.

I then started looking back into cut paper - something I haven't worked with since way back in the Visual Skills Module at the start of the year. I managed to find shades of grey papers in library which were perfect for the levels of tone I was looking for in the tests - and I started working into the top of them with pencil crayon.

These are a mixture of ink and paper, with the ink plotted down as basic shapes, with paper put on top to add texture and detail. I really love the outcome of these two - I feel like im gradually getting somewhere with synthesising the two media in a way thats refined, yet still manages to capture what charlie chaplin is about character-wise.

My next step of action is to finalise some ideas and start working on producing the end pieces
