OUIL504 Illustration 1 Part 1 - Dealing with the Intangible

After the interim crit, we were asked to go find a series of images from library books that we felt represented the intangible elements of the themes that we'd chosen. I was getting kinda stalled with Environments, as I felt the approach i'd taken to them was veering too far away from Naomi Klein's core source material. So for this, I started to look at themes of consumerism instead.

These were all found in a book about a fine artist called Michael Landy - A guy who's done loads of installations and exhibitions about consumerism and the effect it has on our lives

The above were found a book called "Is britain great? Part 2", a photography book that looks at parts of England that people usually overlook. I thought it was a really good show of the effect a lot of the past 50 years has had on areas of the country, especially in the northern towns where a lot of industry doesn't run any more.

This was from "Outsiders", which is a book of street art compiled by a guy called Steve Lazarides who runs a gallery in london. Street art turned out to be a pretty cool place to look for subversive takes on consumerism and modern culture.

From a book called "Navigating in the dark" which was an anthology of sculpture originally exhibited in incredibly dark spaces. I always think darkness is something that feeds well into consumerism seems a lot of us are kept in the dark by it, and so few of us realise the extent to which it effects our lives.

We were then asked to use a bunch of media to try and capture these intangible themes visually. A lot of people went to town photocopying and making a load of grungy black and white textures, but I didn't think it'd fit the sort of gaudiness that you typically think of with consumerism - its usually trying to sell you an ideal that is impossible to achieve, especially from just buying things.
