I think in hindsight, the timing of this brief was probably not the best, and I think for the benefit of my other practice It would have been better to turn both David and Becky's requests down - rather than try to attempt to take on an entire new skillset that comes with something like storyboarding. The time I spent working on both of these projects held me back from working on my own personal projects - and although it's large in quantity, I don't think visually the work i've produced for this is strong enough to have warranted me doing that.
That being said though, doing two collaborative animation briefs has been really helpful for the development of my practice as a whole. I feel a lot more informed about the process of storyboarding, and I'd love to get the opportunity to do more of it - preferably with people who might be a little bit more professional and who know how to handle group work a lot better.
I think the stumbling point of both of the projects was that the animators (both of whom took me on as directors/project managers, who should have been directing me and telling me what to do as the illustrator) relied on me to make decisions for them - not so much David, but definitely Becky, on things that ultimately should have been their decision.
Not knowing how to properly storyboard in Level 6 is bizarre to me - especially coming in as an illustrator trying to learn, not an animator who's studied it for 3 years. There was a lack of organisation and project management on Becky's part that would have made my job a lot easier - but this is also good for my own personal reflection, as someone who is also terrible at project management and organisation, that you cannot let that happen that when there are other people working with you too. Not only is it unprofessional, it makes the job 10x harder to do when things that should have been very concrete are left incredibly vague.
The upside to this was that I learned a lot very quickly through doing it, and I feel its formed a foundation for me to be able to go away and hone my storyboarding skills independently should I want to do in the future.
